Here Comes the Sun

I am sitting on my back patio listening to the water happily trickle from my hot tub to my swimming pool.  The sun has finally decided to come out and say hello to Houston.  It would appear that summer is on its way.  After all, today IS Memorial Day…this weekend officially kicks off the summer season, right?  That is what we do this weekend…we load up the grills with hamburgers, hotdogs, boudin (if you live down South) and celebrate the return of the Sun shining.

I have to say no, actually, a long weekend means nothing in the grand scope of things.  Today, we celebrate the men and women who have fallen in the line of fire to protect our freedoms.  Today we say thank you.  Today we remember.  A couple of weeks ago, my oldest child had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with his 8th grade class.  He went on a whirlwind tour of monuments, museums, and memorials.  More times than a few, he was overwhelmed at the sheer magnitude of the shadows in which he stood.  Days before he left for D.C. his school performed their annual end of the year school program.  The entire school did a military salute as their Grand Finale; including a re-enactment of the above memorial.  Then, while they were in D.C., the same boys that carried the flag during the school program, posed again, this time in front of the real memorial.

Our children were blessed to see first hand, that our country values the sacrifice of our military.  We honor them.  We lift them up.  We remember them.  My family is proud of ALL of the branches of the Unites States military that are represented.  We support them.  We pray for them.  We are SO proud of them!  It was after Ethan’s trip to D.C. that he came home to tell me that he wants to join the United States Air Force.  I could not be more proud.  My family has a long history with the US Military:

I know today is about remembering those who have fallen, but I want to remember those who are also currently serving, and HAVE served.  Thank you.  We have the life we do because of you.  The life you have chosen is not an easy one.  It is not one that all people can lead, you are chosen and you are called.  May God bless and protect you.

Here’s hoping the Son shines on you today!

Wonderful post Dallas! You should be very proud of Ethan and his sense of patriotism even at his young age. Maybe there is hope for the country. I love that pic of my baby brother in uniform too, great video, thanks Jonathan for the link. One of my best memories is when I went to New Orleans some years ago with him and his buddy Tim and we rode in a military boat in the early morning fog to the place where he re upped for the Reserves, such a moving ceremony to watch. And a fantastic trip too, my first time to NOLA! Thanks for your service!
