Honestly, How LAZY Are We?

Does anyone remember the Farmer’s Almanac?  My grandfather always had a copy of the Almanac laying around the house.  Tucked away inside its pages were weather patterns, annual holidays, and helpful tips about how to live a healthy lifestyle…get this…off the land.

What?!

My grandparents are both gone.  All I have left are memories, and those memories are awesome.  I remember Papa planting a garden out in the pasture, and Mimi (don’t forget I’m from the South) right beside him pulling weeds, picking strawberries, cucumbers, and tomatoes.  My cousins and I would run in and out of the house while Mimi made pickles from those cucumbers; canning them and giving them to our mothers, so we had homegrown pickles to eat for months.

Why am I telling you this?  I have a few of reasons…I usually do…first, many of you read that my oldest kiddo turned fifteen a couple of days ago.  It absolutely breaks my heart that he will not have the same memories of growing up out in the pasture like I did.

Two, did you know that August is BUY YOUR GROCERIES ONLINE MONTH?????  Seriously???  How lazy has our generation become that we cannot even drag ourselves to the grocery store to pick up food (that we did not have to trouble ourselves with growing) to feed our families?  Are you kidding me?

Now, don’t misunderstand me, if I had to grow my own vegetables, my family would starve.  I most certainly did not inherit my grandmother’s green thumb.  I do however, know where the supermarket is located.  I realize that cooking is not everyone’s superpower…or even in some people’s limited vocabulary, but honestly, go to the store and educate yourselves.  Ask questions from the folks in the produce department.  They can and will help you pick out fruits and vegetables that are ripe and ready to eat.  If you are reading this post, it’s fairly safe to say you can read a recipe.

And let me ask you this: Do you really want some flunky from Wal-Mart knowing where you live?

The answer to that question is NO, no you don’t.  Our children are watching us.  Even though they are making an excellent case for not listening to a single word that comes out of our mouths, trust me when I tell you they are watching our every move.  Shouldn’t we be teaching them how to do things for themselves, instead of how to order and outsource everything?  Do we really want the memories they are logging away to be ones of nothing but computer screens and take-out boxes?

I hope not.  Let’s put some realness back into our homes.  I’m all for a bit of convenience, but seriously folks, make a list, get in your car, and go buy your groceries…from the store…or better yet, find a Farmer’s Market.

Here’s hoping your day is FULL of memories!

  • I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one.
In my life, grocery delivery helps me to make more joyful memories. It certainly doesn’t take them away. I don’t think that’s laziness, I think it’s using advance main technology and resources wisely to get more enjoyment out of life.

In the hour and a half (minimum) it takes to drive to the store, walk the aisles, fill my basket (often with extra impulse buys), check out, load the car, drive home and unload the car, I could be doing other more enjoyable things with my time. I’d much rather play a game with my kids, listen to their stories, have a glas of wine with my husband and spend more time cooking dinner or baking with my daughter. Grocery delivery frees up time to make that happen. (Hello, homemade cookies!!)

I am THRILLED to see grocery delivery finally making its way to the suburbs so I can spend more time on more meaningful things.

    • Hi Amy!
Thank you for your insightful comment…you brought a side to the table I had not thought about. I thank you for that. I would gladly sit with you and partake with a nice glass of red wine during some down-town; however, while I will agree that your argument poses a “non-lazy” scenario, I will now respectfully disagree with you. I like grocery shopping…I even sometimes take my kiddos with me (gasp) albeit not ALL of them at the same time! The kids enjoy my impulse buys, and I enjoy people-watching in its purest form!

But, thank you for your comment. Please keep reading and keep commenting…and please let’s get together for that glass of wine!

      Hugs,

  • Grocery shopping is not on my fun list unless you are with me. You could have been a chef at a high end restaurant and I can see you enjoying a trip to the grocery store. You are probably on a first name basis with the produce manager. One of the many things I love about you!

  • As a mother of five, I’m totally fine being lazy and having groceries delivered to my house. Grocery shopping with all of my kids makes me feel like the ringmaster in a five ring circus…I like to keep their shenanigans contained to our house as much as possible because they wear me out.

    • With five kids…you get a pass! I used to grocery shop with a newborn, a one- and two-year-old…grocery trips required medication and alcohol! But, it taught me patience and my children obedience. I gave them tasks and opportunities to “help” me with the shopping. Was it all roses and smooth sailing? Of COURSE NOT! We had some pretty fantastic and award-winning melt downs in the aisles of our local supermarkets, but now thanks to our early outings, I can take them anywhere. Also, they really do reach an age when you can leave them home alone while you get some errands run.

Thanks for the great comment! Keep reading!
      Hugs my friend!!

I like grocery shopping. It is guaranteed guilt free shopping spree once a week. As long as I don’t go on an empty stomach and buy everything in the deli, bakery, and meat departments, it is a shopping spree that benefits everyone.
