I am sitting on my couch, listening to the morning news warn us about an impending arctic blast wending its way ferociously across the country.  It would seem that fall (winter) has decided to make an appearance not only in the northern half of the U.S., but all the way down here in southeast Texas, as well. It is also Veteran’s Day. For most folks that means a three-day weekend.

But, what does that really mean?

I have to say no, actually, a long weekend means nothing in the grand scope of things.  Today, we celebrate the men and women who have fallen in the line of fire to protect our freedoms.  Today we say thank you.  Today we remember.  A few years ago, our children had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with their 8th grade classes.  They went on a whirlwind tour of monuments, museums, and memorials.  More times than a few, they were overwhelmed at the sheer magnitude of the shadows in which they stood.  Days before my oldest child left for his D.C. trip, his 8th grade performed their annual end of the year school program.  The entire school did a military salute as their Grand Finale; including a re-enactment of the above memorial.  Then, while they were in D.C., the same boys that carried the flag during the school program, posed again, this time in front of the real memorial.

Our children were blessed to see first hand, that our country values the sacrifice of our military.  We honor them.  We lift them up.  We remember them.  My family is proud of ALL of the branches of the Unites States military that are represented.  We support them.  We pray for them.   I could not be more proud.  My family has a long history with the US Military:

Today is about saying “thank you” to those who serve to protect the freedoms we enjoy.  We have the life we do because of you.  The life you have chosen is not an easy one.  It is not one that all people can lead, you are chosen and you are called.  May God bless and protect you.

It’s 11-11….make a wish!
