Home Alone

Many students across the country are waking up this morning reveling in the fact that TODAY is the first day of Spring Break.  My kids are included in that revelry.  In fact, their celebration started yesterday afternoon around 3:00, as they loaded up the suburban to make the drive to Austin from Houston in order to catch a flight to Denver, Colorado.  You see, we live in Houston.  For those of you who may be slightly geographically challenged, Houston is located in deep southeast Texas–it is HOT here.  It is HOT, HOT, HOT in Houston nine months out of the year.  It is just HOT one month out of the year.  And the remaining two months, is anyone’s guess.  Last week (the first week of March) in a twenty-four period, we saw 82-degrees and 34-degrees–sunshine bright enough for a tan, and rain hard enough to destroy a baseball field.  Houston.  We love it here.  The one thing we do not see, is snow.  Sure, we’ve seen flakes, but not SNOW.  So, for Spring Break hubby and I decided to take the kids skiing in Colorado.

They were pumped.

We have been planning this trip since October.  I was a bit concerned that my kids’ Spring Break and my Spring Break did not match up (I’m in my last semester of University), but I figured we would make it work.  I was wrong.  I have this one professor who is more than a little cranky…he tends to make days unbearable.  Should I choose to attend Spring Break with my family, I will be missing an exam and Lab.  The Lab will receive a zero, and the exam will be moved to the end of the semester, instead of scheduling a make-up time around the trip.  Ugh.  Jeff and I decided I would stay home.

I cried.

My family left yesterday.  The kicker to this was the texts I kept getting from the airline about the flight.  First the flight time was slightly delayed.  No biggies.  Then there was a gate change.  Okay.  But then, the text came through confirming my FIRST CLASS UPGRADE. Problem.  I love first class.  I mean, who doesn’t???  We were traveling with another family, and all four adults got bumped to first class, while the five kids were stuck in economy.  Home Alone, much?

So now, here I am…sitting at home…alone…while my family is enjoying the beautiful snow-covered mountains in Colorado.  But, this will be okay.  My hubby travels every week for work, and he misses out on lots of special time with the kids.  Spending this week with the kids will provide him with uninterrupted time–without me butting in!  Daddy does things differently.  Daddy is WAY more fun!  I will miss them terribly this week, but I am excited about the new fun and relationships that will beef up while they are with Dad this week.

Here’s hoping your Alone time is just what you need!

  • Great read, I can so relate about not liking to be alone. I hate it with a passion. I really appreciate how you put a positive spin on something that is my biggest weakness. I am sure your family will enjoy themselves. I am sure you will be on their hearts and minds the entire trip too.

  • Love this! Just enjoy your week “home alone” and try to sneak in some “you time”! Sounds like you deserve it!
