He’s Not My Father

Happy Father’s Day!!

It’s Father’s Day today, and I’m sitting on my couch enjoying the peace and quiet before all manners of creatures awake in my house.  I can smell the delicious quiche baking in the oven that I made for my hubby.  I am about to set out all of his goodies that the kids and I have collected for him to showcase our appreciation for all of his hard work and sacrifice he makes for his family…but then a thought occurred to me…a disturbing thought…I have heard this statement from more than one source as Father’s Day has slowly and steadily made its way forward:

He’s not my father…

The statement reads, “He’s not my father, why would I get him something?”  This most often comes from wives…mainly from wives whose children have left the nest, but some who still have baby birds circling the tree.  He’s not my father…I’m not getting him anything…

Really?

Let me ask you something: Do you expect something on Mother’s Day?

I would wager that most women do.  Not all–but most.  My husband is not my father.  But he IS the father of my children.  He IS the stability that holds this crazy train on the track.  He IS the financial institution that keeps our heads above water.  He IS the head of our family.  He IS the example of true and proper manly behavior for our boys when it comes to how women should be treated, and the bar to which our daughter will measure every single man she ever meets.  He IS the love of my life.

So, no, he is not my father.  I only have one of those.  He lives in San Diego.  Happy Father’s Day, Daddy…I love you.  My sisters and I are working on your gift.  But as for my husband, he’s not my father, but I will celebrate him for the wonderful FATHER that he is, on this Father’s Day and next year’s and the year after and, well you get the picture.

I suggest you do the same.  Our husbands are not our fathers, but they teach our children how to be, and they deserve a day to be celebrated.

Here’s hoping your day is one to CELEBRATE!
